The Forest Cathedral

--> International IInternational I SamplerFrance IFrance IIFrance IIIItaly IItaly IIItaly IIISpain/PortugalNetherlands"Forest Cathedral" Location: Galgano,Tuscany, ItalyCatalog Number: 2226 While on our way to visit the open air cathedral at Galgano in Tuscany (where the roof either was never completed or fell in), we came across this planted forest. The canopy of the leaves and the trunks, creating a vanishing point to the wild forest beyond, conspired to preview our destination with an open air cathedral of its own. I waited for the sun to go behind clouds to create the flat, painterly quality of the image.

Cook Forest State Park features 47 miles of hiking trails that explore many habitats including old growth forest. The 8,500-acre Cook Forest State Park and 3,136 acre Clarion River Lands are popular for hiking, camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing. Explore the Long Fellow Trail loop and surround yourself with the calm of this ancient forest.

The North Country National Scenic Trail (NST) intersects Cook Forest State Park and State forest lands. From leisurely day hikes, to intensive days or month-long treks, plan and prepare for your NST experience.

This National Natural Landmark is home to some of the oldest trees east of the Rockies. The size of the trees in the Forest Cathedral rival many of the great forests of the western US and are quite an impressive sight to see.

I was the park suit at the park fro 1955-57 . Remember well the wind storm in sept 19956 which blew done a lot of the forest cathedral [email protected] Strange no longer having the old Cook Forest Inn with Helen Mensler. The swinger bridge was built by sultan don clewell about 1964. Surely a wonderful place

The Monteverde Reserve is probably the most well known, well-researched cloud forest in the world. Scientific work here over the past 50 years has led to a better understanding of the ecology of other cloud forests, wherever they might exist. The reserve was established in 1972, by a group of Quaker American immigrants, and has grown from 810 acres (only 1.2 square miles) to 35,089 acres (close to 50 square miles).

Costa Rica has a long history of environmental policy that supports landowners in preserving (or replanting) the forest. In 1996 it became illegal to remove forest without approval from authorities. Costa Rica also introduced the Payments for Environmental Services (PES) Program (a program that pays landowners to protect the forest, conserve biodiversity and mitigate CO2 emissions, financed by a tax on fossil fuels). In the past 40 to 50 years, the country has been able to reverse deforestation, and has gone from being a country with one of the highest deforestation rates in the world, to serving as a model for other tropical countries.

In 1880, the Brookside Resort, offering recreational opportunities to visitors from Washington and Baltimore, was built on the present park site. Resort cottages and the barn still remain. In 1922, Brandon Hass, Brookside caretaker, purchased the forest. He sold the property to the state in 1942, with the stipulation the old forest never be cut down. In 1966, the park was entered in the National Register of Natural Landmarks. Cathedral State Park is a day-use facility, with no lodging or camping accommodations. 041b061a72
